Uganda successfully marked the world tourism day

tourismThe tourism fraternity in Uganda gathered in Lira town on Sunday 27th Sept to mark the World Tourism Day an event that is celebrated globally with the intention of raising awareness about the tourism significance including the Uganda safaris.
Running under theme "One billion tourists, one billion opportunities.” the tourism day demonstrates the power of the tourism industry to generate inclusive development, create employment opportunities and building of sustainable societies. The theme gave an insight to the myriad of opportunities that are found in the tourism sector that has the potential to transform the developing economies to better standards through increased tourism revenue generation including the revenue acquired from the travelers that take safaris in Uganda.
The Uganda Tourism Board’s interest to decentralize tourism compelled it to organize this world event in Lira town which is apparently not doing well in terms of preparedness and development of tourism and the reception of the Uganda safari undertakers. The world Toursm day enabled Uganda Tourism Board to identify the potential of tourism in northern Uganda.
The event was marked by week long festivities that included art exhibition and the tourism attractions in the country showcased at Lira Golf Course grounds along with the discounted Uganda tour to Murchison Falls National Park.
The World Tourism Day managed to successfully demonstrate to the locals in Lira and the surrounding districts that tourism is not a preserve for the foreigners and therefore can participate in exploring the beauty of their country crowned the Pearl of Africa while not spending expensively.
The week-long festival was crowned with a live tourism concert conducted at Lira Hotel where a range of local artistes including the Captain Ice, Cindy Sanyu, Mzee B of 2Stars and Holy Demsan performed and the Lango traditional dancers showcased their energetic performances.
Tourism is notably a key sector in Uganda having generated $1.4 billion in the year 2014 rising from $1.1 billion of 2013 giving it an edge over the traditional top exchange earners – the Coffee and remittances from abroad.
The day was also a moment of reflection on how Uganda can transform her tourism sector to attain the greater heights by attracting more world travelers to plan safaris to Uganda.
